Medicines from Byfield . You may be unaware that medicines for Boddington people are collected from Byfield Medical Centre each Thursday and delivered to the Shop. If you would like your prescriptions brought into the village, make sure you put your order into the surgery early in the week, ask for it to be put in the ‘Boddington Box' and then pick up your medicines from the Shop from mid-afternoon on Thursday.
Boddington Shop. First of all I'm pleased to say the Tasting Morning was very well attended and was great fun too – thank you to all who stopped by. Marriott's sausages were well approved by all and I stock those, as well as their bacon, on a regular basis now. The sausage flavours are innovative (caramelised red onion, Thai, Toulouse to name a few) and vary from week to week, though there is always a Lincolnshire sausage available for those who prefer something more traditional. I sell at the same price you'd pay at Marriott's shop.
Also on offer to taste were fresh cheeses (Somerset Brie, Cornish Yarg, Colston Bassett Shropshire Blue and a very fine Vintage Cheddar from Somerset), which will also be a regular addition. These soon sold out and I'll be featuring two different cheeses this Friday onwards and will continue to offer different cheeses every other week or so, from the UK and abroad. Also coming in this week will be Olives and Pate, which I'm looking forward to tasting and suspect will go down well!
Homemade Jams, Marmalades and Chutneys were also on the tasting table. The Whisky Marmalade was a particular favourite amongst the tasters and would be a great accompaniment to a Granary Tin Loaf (tasted as well and very popular since), cooked fresh in the shop each weekend. Liquid tasters included Cider from Hellidon (made with Herefordshire cider apples and great for drinking nicely chilled or as a very flavoursome addition to cooked dishes) and chilled Pomegranate juice (Pomegreat), both of which are now stocked.
Last week I introduced a Fruit and Veg box scheme (takers so far very complimentary – please contact me at the shop for details) as well as offering the same top quality fresh fruit and veg in the shop for those who didn't want a box. The quality spoke for itself as customers returned during the week to buy more. I'll be going to a wholesale market each Friday morning so I can personally select the best quality seasonal produce available. That means too all the produce will be truly fresh unlike that on any supermarket shelf. It also means I can cut out the middle man and offer competitive prices. Grade 1 Cauliflowers were on sale in the shop last week for 66p each, whereas Tesco, for example, were selling Grade 2 Cauliflowers for 88p each. Excepting Bananas and Apples, all the produce I bought was English grown.
It's almost a year since I took over as your village shopkeeper and those of you who regularly use the shop have seen the changes made to the décor as well as what's on offer. If you haven't been into the shop for a while, why not come along and take a look? You'll get a friendly welcome and no pressure to buy. If you didn't already know, there's a Dry Cleaning/Shoe Repair service available through the shop. Organic brown and white rustic loaves, baguettes, Danish pastries, are cooked in the shop each day (White and Granary Tin Loaves on w/ends) and can be ordered in any quantity if you let me know the day before you need them. Coming soon are bread making flours from a mill in Oxfordshire and local honey. Watch this space for more new products in the future! Julia.
P.S. Did you know you can top up your mobile at the Post Office and withdraw cash there too (some cards not accepted)? And if you want to order foreign currency, I can get that for you next day if you order before 2pm on a week day.
